Living life in Recovery

Many questions revolve around ‘how to live life in recovery, ‘how is it achieved’, ‘where do I begin’, and ‘what does recovery mean to me?’

In this blog post, we will explore different methods people use to pursue recovery in their lives, how people find support on the lonely road of recovery, and the topic of resilience.

Recovery will not always be easy. There will be times when you want to quite. See how an individual therapy can support you and your recovery process.

As one can imagine, recovery looks different for each and every person. For some, recovery means reducing or limiting the use of substances and/or alcohol. For others, it can mean complete abstinence from alcohol and/or substances altogether. Other times, recovery can include living life with a chronic health condition and managing stress levels to minimize symptom flare ups.

Living in recovery can also include other areas of life. These areas could include: mental health, Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), chronic health issues, and cancer (this is not an exhaustive list).

Find What Works Best for You

Recovery includes many different areas, as noted above. How each person pursues recovery can differ from others. The important thing to remember with recovery, is that it has to have meaning for you. Some people may find support from connection to a spiritual or religious institution, others will find support by being in nature. Others will utilize Alcohol Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, or Adult Children of Alcoholics and Dysfunctional Families – other people may not. Some people may utilize time in the gym, walking, running, or yoga. There are many ways to pursue recovery. Finding what supports work for you is the most important.

Recovery Won’t Be Perfect

Most have heard that recovery is not a straight line. There will be good times, rough times, and times you will want to give up. Making important decisions when in a heightened emotional state can have negative effects in our lives. Being aware of this is important.

Don’t Give Up

Resilience, persistence, and grit underpin the recovery process. In the recovery process, you don’t have to do it alone. You can ask for support or help. Fighting this fight can be a lonely road. Including others that care about you or other professionals to support you can be a great way to support the recovery process.
