Somehow, you got this far in life. Despite the pent-up energy bottled up inside, you’ve achieved things in life that didn’t seem possible. Maybe you found the career you love, graduated college, are living your dreams, or finally found your soulmate. But there’s this issue that never goes away. The emotions and energy inside you continues to build and only come out in anger or outbursts that leave you feeling guilty and shameful while bashing your self-esteem. This blog post will cover how bursting at the seams impacts you and the effects of trauma from an EMDR therapist’s perspective.
Did You Know?
Did you know that chronic stress and/or traumatic experiences leave marks (stored nervous system dysregulation) inside the body? More can be read here on Understanding the Impact of Trauma by the National Library of Medicine. If these moments of stored nervous system dysregulation are not healed, they will continue to impact daily activities, significant relationships, and your quality of life.
Suppressing Doesn’t Work Anymore
You can only hold so much as the internal stress and intense emotions build over time. Suppressing these experiences will buy you time – maybe months, years, or decades. But, sooner or later, these inner experiences will break out. However, if they are addressed, not avoided, and integrated into the nervous system, their negative charge and, therefore, challenges may be lessened. Thus, you can live life with more joy and less fear.
Interpersonal and Relationships Challenges Mount
Two areas I often see impacted by anger are your relationship with yourself and others. The relationship we have with ourselves is of utmost importance. It is the common factor we bring into every area of our lives, from work to family gatherings to marriages and the inner critic of in your mind. If we have a poor sense of self or low self-esteem, this will intensify the challenges of life. Positive self-esteem is a massive buffer to endure adversity.
Low levels of self-esteem can also break apart important relationships. It’s difficult to authentically connect and maintain relationships with others when we have past wounds that aren’t healed or difficulty managing emotions. This can push those we care about away and increase isolation.
Bouts of Anger
Suppressing internal pain and stress may also increase anger levels. We can only hold so much internal turmoil inside until it begins to break through. These breakthrough emotions usually occur when we are around those we care about most. That usually means those closest to us. Anger can also push away those we care most about in life.
You Know There’s a Better Way
This pattern gets old, and white knuckling isn’t working the best for you. You also don’t feel like you are truly who you are with all these pent-up internal experiences that drive your life. Maybe finding a trauma therapist near you can help you heal.
