EMDR therapy does this via bilateral stimulation of tapping or side-to-side eye movements. By reprocessing past traumatic experiences, although the memories still exist, they lose their visceral emotional charge. 

With somatic experiencing therapy, we first work to reconnect the mind-body connection and then begin to track and notice sensations within the body. This form of therapy helps to gently but directly integrate past traumatic and overwhelming experiences by giving the body time and space to heal. When we experience high levels of stress, the body holds that stressful experience in the body. If this is not fully integrated into the body, then you may develop trauma-related symptoms. Somatic experiencing therapy helps to complete these stored trauma responses in the body. So your symptoms decrease in both intensity and frequency, and you heal from the pain of your past.

The first few sessions will be us getting to know each other. We need to build a solid foundation of trust before we can start going into the heavier material. From there, we’ll start to build skills so that you can regulate yourself when intense emotions arise, and simultaneously begin to process and integrate those past traumatic memories.
