Stuck, frozen, heart racing, internal restlessness that can’t calm, sweating when there’s nothing to sweat about. Do some of these sound familiar to you? Performance anxiety can show up in sports, entrepreneurs, or as a CEO or executive of a company. This blog post will explore the topic of performance anxiety beyond the bedroom, when men can’t show up for their lives, and how men’s therapy in Milwaukee, WI can help.

Performance Pressure Isn’t Just Sexual

There’s more to just playing the part, whether that’s for the job, as a partner, as an athlete, or as a business owner. It’s almost like we get right to the tipping point or the pinnacle of the game, but we get stuck. We don’t know what happens. From there, we’re feeling defeated, less than, shameful, and unworthy of where we are in life or what happened.

What Is Performance Anxiety (Outside the Bedroom)?

Anxiety can have biological components. But it’s also brought on by chronic stress, past traumatic experiences, or the fear of failure. Depending on your situation, as a man, anxiety may show up differently.

Workplace Performance Anxiety

Workplace performance anxiety can show in different ways. Because it can happen right before a big presentation, or you right after you are promoted into a new role, and now you’re wondering if you can actually perform at that level. At any rate, there’s an anxiety in your body as you question what you’re capable of. Individual therapy for men can help with this anxiety, so that you can excel in your job position and not self-sabotage.

Relationship Performance Anxiety

Anxiety can influence how vulnerable and/or how fearful we are in relationships. Performance anxiety can dictate the overall quality or the unhappiness that develops over time in a relationship. But it doesn’t have to be this way.

Social & Identity-Based Anxiety

You might even feel stuck between trying to make new social connections in life. Sometimes, you are afraid to leave your home or afraid of connecting with others in case they hurt you. Don’t allow performance-based anxiety to ruin your meaningful life.

Signs a Man Is Struggling to “Show Up”

Every man will experience different signs that he’s struggling to be the person he wants to be. Some men will struggle to sit down and relax, while others will notice chronic fatigue due to constant anxiety and disrupted sleep patterns. Some may even outwardly state that they can no longer do certain activities because their anxiety levels are so high. These and others not mentioned here could all be signs that a man is struggling with showing up.

Why High-Performing Men in Milwaukee Struggle with Performance Anxiety

If you’re a man and you’re in a high-performing role, there’s that much added pressure on you and the decisions you make. This can dictate your performance as well as the performance of others around you. Don’t allow the pressures of your career impact you and the relationships in your life.

Identity Built Around Achievement

As men, we can sometimes become attached to the idea of achievement, and if we’re not achieving, that means we are less than or failing on some level. It’s important to note that, as men, we need to separate ourselves from achievement identities. Achievements can be taken away from us very quickly. That’s easier said than done. Working with a male therapist near you can help decouple those overly connected experiences between achievement and identity.

Cultural Messaging Around Masculinity

Every man has different views on masculinity and what it means to ask for help. Sometimes we can push through, and other times it’s like running into a concrete wall over and over again. What you believe can sometimes get you stuck. It’s very courageous to reach out for help. You don’t have to suffer alone.

Hidden Depression & Burnout

If you’re in careers that are ridden with stress, trauma, and/or high-level performers, you can burn out. If we don’t rejuvenate the body, it’s almost like depression sets in as you lose motivation, start to not care about anything, and lose direction in life.

The Cost of Not Addressing Performance Anxiety

The cost of not addressing performance anxiety will vary from man to man. Some men may lose careers or jobs. Others may lose their wives or partners. Every situation is different, knowing what the short and long-term costs are can help you make a decision whether to ask for help or continue to muddle through life.

How Men’s Therapy in Milwaukee, WI Helps

We start by connecting and building a professional relationship. From there, we begin to track, notice, and name different sensations and emotions within the body. This helps to build a mind-body connection. From there, we will begin to slowly integrate sensations and emotions within the body. This will allow your capacity to be with emotions to expand. This will also allow for further integration of anxiety, trauma, and past overwhelming experiences that are held in your body, leading to decreased amounts of anxiety.

  • Practical, Solution-Focused Approach: You want results. You want your life back. By starting individual therapy for men, you can bring those things into your life.
  • Rebuilding Internal Confidence: As we work through integrating and releasing anxiety within the body, your confidence will start to flourish, so you can tackle those work meetings like nothing.
  • Learning to Show Up Without Overperforming: You’ll be able to meet situations with the appropriate amount of presence, poise, and attention that they deserve. In other words, you don’t have to worry about being overreactive or underreacting.

Who Benefits Most from Therapy?

Any man who struggles with performance-based anxiety and/or anxiety that permeates their lives can benefit from working with a men’s therapist in Milwaukee, WI.

Why Working with a Men’s Therapist Matters

Working with the men’s therapist matters for different reasons. First, your past trauma may stem from another man, and that is exactly the type of therapeutic relationship you want, so you can heal as a man. Second, your past therapists may have been female and haven’t worked out. Third, you want to work with somebody who was raised with similar beliefs and cultural messaging as you were.

Additional Therapy Services Offered at Revitalize Mental Health LLC

At Revitalize Mental Health LLC, I recognize that performance anxiety—whether in the workplace, relationships, or high-pressure situations—stems from deeper nervous system patterns that keep you stuck in freeze or fight responses. While this post focuses on performance anxiety beyond the bedroom, I also work with men addressing the underlying trauma, chronic stress, and identity issues that fuel anxiety and prevent them from showing up fully.

I frequently work with high-performing men in demanding roles: executives, entrepreneurs, athletes, and professionals whose careers depend on peak performance but whose anxiety sabotages them at critical moments. Sessions are collaborative and intentionally paced, using evidence-based approaches such as EMDR, Somatic Experiencing, CBT, and ACT. I offer both in-person therapy in the  Milwaukee area, as well as virtual therapy throughout Wisconsin and Colorado.

About the Author

I’m Daniel, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and the founder of Revitalize Mental Health LLC. I specialize in working with high-performing men who struggle with performance anxiety—those who freeze before presentations, shut down in critical moments, or feel stuck between fight or flight when it matters most. I understand that anxiety isn’t weakness; it’s your nervous system protecting you in ways that no longer serve you.

My approach creates a collaborative space where men can rewire the patterns keeping them frozen and rebuild the internal confidence needed to show up fully. As a certified EMDR therapist with advanced training in Somatic Experiencing, ACT, and CBT, I work at your pace to address what’s happening in your body, not just your mind. The goal is to help your nervous system learn to meet high-pressure situations without shutting down or overreacting.

I bring practical solutions, clinical expertise, and straightforward support to every session. Outside of therapy, I maintain balance through outdoor activities, strength training, reading, and spending time with family. My mission is simple: help men stop freezing when it matters and start performing with the confidence they know they’re capable of.
