Why Are Men So Afraid to Start Trauma Therapy?

The sheer experience of trauma is enough to leave its mark(s) on the body and change your thought processes. So why would anyone want to relive it? This is a complete and natural response when working to heal from past trauma. It’s a normal response not to want to go back. What’s crucial to understand is that trauma therapy doesn’t involve reliving the past traumatic event. It’s more about discharging the stored energy, tension, and stress that the body continues to carry so that the trauma symptoms can be alleviated. Bearded man in a gray shirt standing in a dark wood paneled room looking down beside a rain streaked window. You don't have to keep carrying it alone. Trauma therapy in Milwaukee, WI gives men a safe space to begin releasing what the body has been holding.

What Is Trauma Therapy for Men Actually Trying to Do?

Trauma therapy for men aims to do a few different things. The underlying goal is healing from past traumatic experiences. This is done through creating stability in the body and mind. It also involves re-regulating the nervous system and gently but intentionally integrating those past emotionally charged memories. To allow for integration, you don’t need the whole memory. You only need bits and pieces of emotion, sensation, cognitive thought, or imagery. With somatic experiencing therapy, this is done in a titrated manner. This ensures you don’t overwhelm your nervous system and body, which could lead to re-traumatization.

What Does EMDR Actually Involve and What Doesn’t It Involve?

EMDR is a form of trauma therapy that can help you greatly improve your quality of life by helping you heal from trauma. EMDR is supported by the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) system theory. This theory supports that the body innately knows how to heal, but that when a human experiences trauma or overwhelm, the body can hold onto stored energy it’s unable to process through on its own. With EMDR, bilateral stimulation is used to help get that material moving in your system so that the body can process and integrate past traumatic experiences stored within the body.

EMDR can be great for some individuals, and for others it is not effective. For example, very concrete thinkers may also struggle while engaged in EMDR reprocessing because they may be stuck in reality versus what’s happening inside their body. Some individuals may also need a prolonged time building internal resources to help buffer against activation during EMDR trauma therapy sessions. Working with a certified EMDR therapist can help guide you on which type of trauma therapy is best for you.

Why the Body and Not the Story Is the Starting Point in Somatic Experiencing

Somatic experiencing is a body-oriented form of psychotherapy aimed at helping you heal from a variety of different unresolved trauma and overwhelming responses. This type of therapy starts by creating safety within the body and nervous system regulation throughout the body. Somatic experiencing then moves to gentle pendulations between areas of comfort within the body and areas of tension and or activation. This is done in a titrated manner, so you do not overwhelm your nervous system and body. The integration allows your body time and space to complete thwarted trauma responses. Somatic experiencing aims to help you heal by integrating stored aspects of past traumatic experiences that your body clings to and can’t let go of by completing natural threat responses.

Somatic experiencing works well with many different men due to its ability to heal the body and navigate internal defense responses. Even men, despite being strong and persistent, still need to heal from overwhelming events. Men are not immune to the effects of trauma. Somatic experiencing helps to work through defense mechanisms that are very adaptive but harmful in the long run. These defense mechanisms men may use include: rationalization, intellectualization, suppression, derealization, dissociation, and denial. As most of these defense mechanisms are mostly cognitive in nature, somatic experiencing begins to work in the body upwards to change thought processes. If you are a man and looking for a trauma therapist throughout Southeastern WI, Revitalize Mental Health provides somatic experiencing therapy that can help you heal.

What Does IFS Involve and How Is It Different from EMDR and Somatic Experiencing?

IFS addresses trauma in a different way than EMDR and somatic experiencing. IFS utilizes parts work – for example, a helper part, a savior part, a healer part, a victim part, and a survivor part. People develop various parts throughout their lives depending on their unique life situations. Through the interplay of parts, IFS helps you to heal and integrate different aspects of traumatic experiences that hinder your life. IFS works well for many people due to each person developing different parts throughout their lives.

Why Good Trauma Therapists Never Start with the Deep End

A good trauma therapist will start with stabilization before dipping into trauma material. The reason behind this is that the body needs to feel safe enough to let down some degree of defensiveness and be open to the possibility of healing. The stabilization phases also involve many different coping skills and internal regulation skills that are built and fostered so that the nervous system and body can reregulate after activation. Stabilization is needed so that you do not experience re-traumatization in trauma therapy sessions and in your life.

What Does the First Trauma Therapy Session for Men in Milwaukee Actually Look Like?

The first trauma therapy session for men in Milwaukee, WI, is just like a normal intake session. You and I will get to know each other so that we can start to facilitate the stabilization that’s needed prior to engaging in deeper trauma work. Some men already have the internal regulation skills to allow for deeper trauma work to occur faster than others. Every man is unique in their healing needs and internal coping mechanisms.

Why First Responders in Milwaukee Deserve Trauma Therapy Without Having to Relive It

Of the different professions throughout the United States, first responders experience higher levels of traumatization than most other professions. This is due to being on the front lines of accidents, shootings, physical violence, and suicides. One experience like this by itself is enough to create PTSD. Some people will not develop PTSD from just one event, but it may take a few different experiences or years to form a trauma response, and possibly PTSD.

It can be challenging for first responders to ask for support. They may not want to be seen as weak, don’t want to ask for extra help, or fear that others will find out they’re in therapy. The longer people try to white-knuckle and suppress their emotions related to the trauma, the stronger and harder those layers become. Over time, that trauma becomes more deeply held in the body. The beautiful thing here is that you can heal and improve your quality of life.

How Do You Find a Trauma Therapist in Milwaukee, WI Who Actually Works This Way?

Finding a trauma therapist in Milwaukee, WI can be challenging. There are many different forms of trauma therapists, and you’ll need to research and find which one is a great match for you. You also want to utilize a free consultation call that most therapists offer to ensure that you are a good fit to work together.

At Revitalize Mental Health, I utilize somatic experiencing as well as EMDR to help you heal and reach your highest potential. Clients tend to reach out to me because they’ve tried to talk therapy or other forms of trauma therapy, and they haven’t worked. These people still feel tension throughout their body, have thought rumination, experience difficulties with quality sleep, experience hypervigilance, and an internal restlessness that they can’t shut off.

What’s important to see is that finding a trauma therapist in Milwaukee is possible, and trauma therapy can be done either in person or virtually. I am accepting both in-person trauma therapy clients as well as virtual trauma therapy clients throughout Wisconsin. I have found that the drive from Hales Corners, Frankline, Wind Lake, Paddock Lake, and Lake Geneva, WI is manageable for in-person therapy sessions.

Trauma Therapy Without Re-living FAQs

Still not sure what trauma therapy actually involves, or worried about what you’ll have to face in the room? Whether you’re wondering if you have to describe everything in detail, what happens if you feel overwhelmed, or how this is different from just talking to a friend, the answers below are here to help.

Do I have to describe my trauma in detail to get help?

No, you don’t need to describe your past traumatic experience in detail to heal. In somatic experiencing, you work with the stored stress that the body holds from past traumatic or overwhelming experiences. This enables you to then integrate those forms of stress within the body, helping to alleviate trauma symptoms.

What is the difference between re-living trauma and processing it?

People relive trauma every day. It’s like the video starts over again every morning. It doesn’t stop till the end of the day. Processing and integrating trauma are different because when that video plays, the emotional and visceral body responses are no longer there. Memories will always exist. Therapy can’t get rid of them, but you can take the charge off of those memories.

Can EMDR work without me talking about what happened?

Yes, EMDR can work without talking about past traumatic experiences. In between bilateral stimulation sets, you are asked to share what you are noticing now. Those check-ins are very brief and do not go into a lot of detail. But the therapist needs to know that the traumatic material is moving forward and not stuck. This is a sign that EMDR is working.

What if I start to feel overwhelmed during a trauma therapy session?

This is a reason why stabilization and working with a trained trauma therapist in Milwaukee, WI is so important. If you begin to feel overwhelmed during the trauma therapy session, you can move into stabilization skills, and the trauma therapist will also be able to recognize your dysregulation to slow the session down so that you can re-regulate your body and nervous system.

Is somatic experiencing effective even if I can’t identify what my trauma is?

Absolutely. Somatic experiencing often works with implicit trauma, or even trauma experienced during birth or while in utero. These experiences do not have explicit timelines and are only sensed through the felt sense of the body.

How is trauma therapy different from just venting to a friend?

Just venting to a friend or even engaging in talk therapy only engages the cognitive functions of your brain. Trauma is stored within the body, not just the mind, and that needs to be healed and integrated. Both EMDR and somatic experiencing incorporate large amounts of body sensation, emotion, impulses to move, and actions that you may wish you had taken during past overwhelming events. These trauma responses need to be completed in order to discharge stored traumatic energy held in the body.

What if I tried therapy before and it made things worse?

This could be due to a few factors. One factor is that the stabilization period wasn’t long enough or as ingrained as it needs to be. Another factor could be that the therapist you were working with may not have had the skills to help you create a safe container and develop your capacity to hold the emotion and the pain that was going to come out during trauma therapy. I would say give it another shot. You’re not going to heal unless you address it. You can also find another therapist if you are not working well with your current therapist.

Stop Letting Fear of the Process Keep You from Healing

Additional Services Offered at Revitalize Mental Health in Wisconsin and Colorado

At Revitalize Mental Health, I understand that trauma doesn’t show up in just one area of your life. The fear of starting therapy, the avoidance, the white-knuckling, it all quietly affects how you work, how you love, and how present you are able to be in your own life. While this blog focuses on what trauma therapy actually involves and why you don’t have to relive the past to heal, I also work with men navigating a range of challenges, including Perfectionism, PanicMood Disorders, Grief and Loss, Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI)Schizophrenia, EMDR Trauma Therapy for First Responders and Military Personnel, and Men and Infidelity.

I frequently work with men who have been putting off getting help because they weren’t sure what therapy would actually ask of them. Sessions are collaborative and intentionally paced, using evidence-based approaches such as EMDR, Somatic Experiencing, CBT, and ACT, bottom-up therapies that work with your body’s natural ability to heal rather than forcing you to talk through every detail of what happened. I offer both in-person therapy in the Milwaukee area, as well as virtual therapy throughout Wisconsin and Colorado.

About the Author

I’m Daniel, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and the founder of Revitalize Mental Health. I specialize in working with men who want to heal from trauma but have been held back by the fear of what that process might actually look like. Many of the men I work with have avoided therapy for years. Not because they didn’t want to get better. But because nobody ever told them that healing doesn’t require reliving.

I understand that taking this step when you don’t fully know what to expect takes real courage. But continuing to let that fear run the show slowly costs you the life you deserve to be living.

My work is rooted in the belief that the body already knows how to heal. It just needs the right conditions and the right pace to do so. As a certified EMDR therapist with advanced training in Somatic Experiencing, ACT, and CBT, I create a space where men can begin to release what they have been carrying. You won’t feel overwhelmed or out of control in this process. The result is a man who no longer has to choose between avoidance and falling apart. He can finally move forward feeling grounded, present, and free.
