This can even lead you to question your own identity, lose your self-confidence, and lose touch with who you truly are. Men who may struggle to reach out or ask for support may end up suffering in silence. What Does It Actually Mean to Feel Like a Shell of Your Former Self?

Many of the men I work with describe feeling like a shell of their former selves, akin to feeling like a ghost going through the motions of their life. Some men won’t even use the phrase of feeling like a shell of themselves, but they express this more as being emotionally numb to life, having difficulty connecting with joy, struggling to connect with their partner or spouse, or even struggling to connect with their children. The body operates this way as a protective mechanism after traumatic situations have been experienced. This isn’t something that needs to be fixed, but something that needs to be healed.

How Does Trauma Actually Create That Empty Disconnected Feeling?

When the body experiences a traumatic or overwhelming event, or witnesses the traumatic event, the nervous system quickly moves into fight-or-flight, freeze, or fawn mode. It does this to protect against a potential threat. However, as a consequence, you may lose the ability to experience nervous system flexibility, emotional connection, and connection with your true self. Men may experience this just as often as women, but are less likely to reach out for support or discuss what is happening in their lives, especially with a trauma therapist in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Men who have experienced trauma and feel like a shell of themselves may present with a wide range of symptoms and other life challenges afterwards. This can include losing your purpose or your drive and ambition in life, or feeling like life has lost its trajectory. Men may also experience various forms of dissociation due to the traumatic experience. For example, you are at American Family Field watching the Brewers game and check out because of difficulty being around large crowds and feeling unsafe. These symptoms directly stem from nervous system dysregulation and the trauma response held in the body. All of these factors can negatively impact your quality of life.

Why Don’t Men Connect These Symptoms to Trauma?

Men may struggle to connect their traumatic experiences to their symptoms for a few different reasons. One is that American society tends to emphasize men’s ability to suck it up and continue forward despite challenges. Another reason is that men who ask for help may be seen as weak or incapable of handling their responsibilities. Lastly, reaching out for trauma therapy may also conflict with their self-concept of being strong and self-sufficient. This is especially true for first responders and veterans, as these professions emphasize independence, resourcefulness, and strength. External and internal pressures combine to keep many men from seeking the support they need.

Why Talk Therapy Alone Often Isn’t Enough to Bring You Back

Men may reach out for therapy but do not know what to look for in a therapist. There are many therapists throughout the Waukesha, Oak Creek, Brookfield, Burlington, and Greenfield, Wisconsin areas. What’s important to note is that talk therapy in general may not be potent enough to help you and your body heal from past traumatic experiences. It could be extremely beneficial to find a trauma therapist in Milwaukee, WI, who is skilled in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) or Somatic Experiencing, as these are both bottom-up forms of trauma therapy.

Bottom-up trauma therapy modalities help the body and nervous system heal and reregulate, allowing for the traumatic experience not only to become integrated within your body, but for your thoughts surrounding the traumatic event to shift as well. Talk therapy first targets the thoughts that you have about the event, and that often does not go deep enough to allow for body-oriented healing.

How Does Trauma Therapy Help Men Reconnect with Themselves?

As mentioned above, bottom-up trauma therapy modalities can be extremely effective in helping men heal from trauma. In bottom-up therapy modalities such as EMDR and somatic experiencing, the goal is to bring back nervous system regulation and a feeling of safety within the body. This helps to deactivate the defense mechanisms that have become overactive after a traumatic experience. From there, trauma therapy helps you both process and integrate those traumatic memories, sensations, flashbacks, and emotions that continue to arise days, weeks, months, or years afterwards.

Somatic Experiencing: Working to Decouple Hypervigilance

Somatic experiencing specifically works to create safety and nervous system balance within the body by undoing overcoupled and undercoupled trauma responses. Overcoupled responses could include nightmares or muscle tensions, whereas undercoupled responses may be your diminished self-confidence or reduced self-esteem after a traumatic event. For example, if somebody experienced a physical altercation near the Brookfield Fire Department, they may have an internal restlessness to constantly scan their environment, otherwise known as hypervigilance, to detect a threat. Somatic experiencing works by gently pendulating between areas of calm and peace, as well as areas of discomfort, tension, and stress within the body to decouple this response. Somatic experiencing helps to integrate these traumatic symptoms in a titrated manner as well as restore nervous system flexibility and a sense of safety within the body.

EMDR: Reprocessing What Keeps the Shell in Place

EMDR therapy works to integrate and process trauma-related material through the use of bilateral stimulation. Bilateral stimulation is often conducted via side-to-side eye movements, alternating shoulder tapping, alternating audio tones in the left and right ear, or by watching a light bar move left and right on a screen. The side-to-side motion activates what EMDR calls the Adaptive Information Processing system, which helps integrate traumatic material but becomes stuck after a traumatic experience. When this AIP system becomes stuck, your body does not allow itself to heal on its own. With EMDR therapy, specific memories are targeted for processing; however, other connected neural networks and memories may surface during reprocessing as well.

What Does Recovery Actually Look Like for Men in Milwaukee?

Men, it is very common to experience trauma recovery by working with a trained trauma therapist in the Milwaukee area. What this will look like is the inverse of what was mentioned at the top of this blog. After trauma therapy, you will once again connect with emotions without becoming overwhelmed, experience a sense of peace and rest in your body, and find that the lingering effects of anxiety, fear, hypervigilance, nightmares, and flashbacks begin to dissipate. The relationship you have with yourself, as well as with others around you, will also flourish. Ultimately, your quality of life will start to increase once you begin healing from past traumatic experiences.

Trauma Therapy in Milwaukee WI Can Help You Come Back

For men in West Allis and New Berlin, Wisconsin, trauma has an interesting way of keeping people stuck – not physically stuck, but emotionally, psychologically, and interpersonally, which diminishes your quality of life. But it doesn’t have to be this way. By working with a trauma therapist in Milwaukee, you can reconnect and heal from those past experiences.

Finding a trauma therapist for men in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, starts with a simple Google search. From there, a list of directories will appear that can help guide you to finding a therapist near you. These directories can be very helpful in locating a therapist. It can also be helpful to scroll past the directories and look at individual therapists’ websites. Directories provide a snapshot of what a therapist can do or how they work, but websites typically provide more information and additional insight into their expertise. At Revitalize Mental Health, I provide somatic experiencing and EMDR to help men heal from trauma, betrayal trauma, and grief and loss. I also work with professionals in high-stress fields such as healthcare, law enforcement, and business ownership.

About the Author

I’m Daniel, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and the founder of Revitalize Mental Health. I specialize in working with men who have lost themselves to trauma — men who used to feel driven, connected, and present but now move through their days feeling numb, disconnected, and like a version of themselves they don’t fully recognize. I understand that this kind of suffering is especially hard for men to talk about. It doesn’t always look like distress from the outside. But on the inside, the absence of feeling fully alive is one of the most exhausting things a man can carry.

My work is focused on helping men come back to themselves. Not the performance of who they think they should be, but the grounded, present, and connected version of themselves that trauma buried. As a certified EMDR therapist with advanced training in Somatic Experiencing, ACT, and CBT, I help men rebuild their nervous system regulation and reconnect with the emotions, relationships, and sense of identity that trauma disrupted. The result is a man who no longer feels like he is watching his own life from a distance. He is fully back in it.
